Traveling to Kodiak

Where to stay and what to do

How do you get here?

Alaska Airlines

Right now, Alaska Airlines is the only air service regularly traveling to Kodiak from Anchorage. Anchorage is the hub for all flights to towns and villages in Alaska

The Alaska Marine Ferry

The Alaska Marine Ferry System serves many coastal communities throughout Alaska, including the town of Kodiak. Visitors should be aware that the ferry is often late, so it might not be the best choice for those on a tight itinerary.

Car Rentals

You can't drive to Kodiak Island, but once you're here you'll want to explore our road system. Here are a some options for car rentals (I'm only listing a few from the top of my list): Turo, Kodiak Car Rentals, and Do North Car Rental.

Lodging

There are many different types of lodging in the town of Kodiak, I've listed a few I commonly recommend

A Downtown Bed And Breakfast

#(907)539-8866

This bed and breakfast is conveniently located near downtown Kodiak. There is the option to rent rooms that include a vehicle. Rooms come with a kitchenette. The minimum stay is 3 nights.

Best Western Kodiak

#(907)486-5712

The Kodiak Best Western is located downtown right near the boat harbor and local restaurants. There is an airport shuttle.

Kodiak Compass Suites

#(907)486-1086

This is a newer hotel located right downtown. Also includes airport pickups

Other Things to do

Guided Hikes

Kodiak Walking Tours

Let Ani, the owner of Kodiak Walking Tours arrange the perfect hiking adventure. From easy family-friendly hikes to challenging backcountry treks, she's got you covered. Ani also offers a downtown Kodiak historical tour.

Camping

There are three campgrounds on the Kodiak road system managed by Alaska State Parks: Ft. Abercrombie Historical Park, Buskin River State Recreation Area and Pasagshak State Recreation Area.

Fishing

Kodiak Island has one of the richest fisheries in the world. If you're interested in catching halibut, king salmon and rockfish (to name a few popular species), then don't waste your time looking elsewhere. There are quite a few charter boat operators, but I'll just list two for brevity: Kodiak Island Adventures and Eric Raisley #(907)539-1890.

Kayaking

You would be remiss to visit Kodiak Island and not see our amazing marine life. Go on a tour with Kayak Kodiak to get the most out of your experience.

Marine Wildlife Tours

Kodiak has an amazing variety of marine wildlife: fin whales, humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, puffins and sea lions. Lee Robbins, owner of Adventures in Kodiak, offers high quality, small group tours catering to wildlife enthusiasts and photographers .

Parks, Museums and an Aquarium

Ft. Abercrombie Historical Park is a must see if you visit the town of Kodiak. The park has an extensive trail system that guides you to the hidden remains of WWII bunkers. There are two excellent museums downtown: the Alutiiq Museum and the Kodiak History Museum. Finally, there is the amazing touch tank and aquarium hosted by the NOAA Fisheries Center, located a short distance from downtown.
